Kollmorgen stepper motors divide each complete shaft rotation into a defined number of equally sized angular steps. By controlling the sequence and number of electrical pulses, the machine controller can command accurate incremental movements, positioning operations and repeatable motion profiles. These two-phase brushless motors are particularly suitable for applications where simple control, high holding torque and predictable positioning are required.

Stepper motors can often perform positioning tasks without a conventional feedback device, provided that the available motor torque remains safely above the load requirement throughout the entire speed and acceleration range. Microstepping control can further improve motion smoothness and reduce vibration. For applications where missed-step detection or position correction is required, a suitable stepper drive can also operate with encoder feedback and closed-loop position control.

Typical applications include feeders, dosing systems, laboratory equipment, printing machinery, packaging machines, handling systems, positioning tables and electrically driven linear actuators. Correct motor selection must be based on the complete torque-speed curve rather than holding torque alone, because the available torque generally decreases as speed increases.
